Does my child need to be having problems at school?

No.

Youth Counselling is available for young people experiencing a wide range of emotional, social and life challenges.

A young person can be attending school successfully and still access counselling through Unstuck Youth.

Does my child need to have stopped attending school to access school support?

No.

School engagement difficulties exist on a spectrum.

Early signs may include anxiety before school, frequent requests to stay home, late arrivals, leaving early, increasing absences, shutdown after school or declining engagement with learning.

You do not need to wait until a young person has completely stopped attending before seeking support.

Do we need a diagnosis?

A formal diagnosis is not required to access Unstuck Youth.

Support is based on what the young person is experiencing and what they need.

No.

Unstuck Youth does not provide formal diagnostic assessments.

Where assessment may be helpful, this can be discussed and you may be encouraged to seek assessment through an appropriately qualified professional.

Can parents be involved?

Yes.

The amount of parent or carer involvement will depend on the young person's age, needs and circumstances.

For younger children, parent involvement will generally be a significant part of the work.

For adolescents, it is important to balance family involvement with providing the young person a space where they feel able to speak openly.

This will be discussed when support begins.

Can parents or carers have sessions without the young person?

Yes.

Parent or carer consultations may be useful when adults need support understanding what is happening for the young person, identifying practical strategies or navigating educational concerns.

Where parent consultation forms part of the young person's support, sessions are charged at $130 per 60 minutes.

Will you talk to my child's school?

Where school involvement would be helpful and the appropriate consent has been provided, Unstuck Youth can communicate with schools and other professionals involved with the young person.

This may include sharing relevant information, attending meetings or contributing to collaborative planning.

What does confidentiality mean for teenagers?

Young people need to know that counselling is a space where they can talk openly.

Information discussed in sessions will generally remain private.

There are, however, limits to confidentiality, including circumstances involving serious concerns about the young person's safety, another person's safety or where information is legally required to be disclosed.

Confidentiality, parent communication and its limits will be discussed clearly at the beginning of support.

Where are appointments available?
